Explore the Vouni–Vrachnou–Livadia hiking route in Andros, with a detour to the ancient Foros Cave. Follow the footsteps of Trail Race runners through lush landscapes and myth-filled terrain.
This dynamic route from Vouni to Livadia, with a detour to the Foros Cave, offers a unique blend of myth, sport, and raw natural beauty. Our journey started from the local monastery, where warm Andriot pastries gave us the energy to set off—alongside a few official participants of the Andros Trail Race 2018, no less! Though we lost sight of the athletes rather quickly, we embraced our own pace, giving us the freedom to explore the route’s hidden gems—especially the jaw-dropping Foros Cave, near the village of Aladinos.
Managed by the local cultural association, this cave is estimated to be 4.5–5 million years old, discovered in 1932. Its eerie name, Foros, possibly originates from folklore about animals mysteriously vanishing into the earth, “paying a tax to the gods.” The cave is well-maintained and worth a stop (guided visits recommended).
From there, the route winds through dense, tunnel-like vegetation, giving the feeling of walking through a hidden jungle. The terrain is diverse, shifting between rocky paths, shaded forest stretches, and open views.
We passed through the charming, elevated village of Vrachnou, and were constantly rewarded with panoramic views of Chora in the distance—making this hike not just rich in discovery, but also incredibly scenic.
